Robin J. Phillips | Interior Designer
Background.
Inspired by Connecticut legend Dr. Henry Lee and the opportunity to study under him, I began my career by earning a degree in Forensic Science—well before “CSI “popularized the field. After realizing that the lab's distinct smells had an unflattering way of lingering, I pivoted to earn an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. This unique blend of scientific methodology, statistical analysis, and behavioral sciences opened the door to a marketing career with Travelers.
Nearly 30 years ago, my husband’s opportunity with Intel brought us to the greater Phoenix area, where we chose to raise our family. When our youngest daughter entered full-time school, I took the opportunity to become a substitute teacher to share the same schedule as my daughters through most of their school years. Meanwhile, I loved collaborating with my daughters on home projects, and with their encouragement, I returned to school to pursue a design degree.
My design journey began at a studio with a beautiful home furnishings showroom, eventually leading me to my dream job with an architect specializing in fine custom homes in Scottsdale. I thrived in that role for five years, developing my skills as both a designer and architect's assistant, and immersing myself in the creative process of building exquisite spaces.
In January 2024, the passing of my mom’s 98-year-old aunt, who had become like a grandmother to me, brought me back to Connecticut. My cousins asked, “When are you moving back?” to which I humorously replied, “Have you looked outside?” while gesturing at the small ice storm affecting my visit. Upon returning to Arizona, I realized how much I was missing family moments. With one daughter married in England and the other exploring opportunities outside of Phoenix, I recognized that life is too short. Despite the weather, I decided to return to Connecticut with my pups—and within a month, I was home again, though everything felt new and different.
As I settled back in, starting my job hunt felt like beginning at ground zero. With the support of family and friends, I explored various opportunities until one stood out as my dream role. Now, I am proud to be part of TAMA Architecture PC, where I work as an interior designer and embrace my diverse skills as a “Jane of all trades.”
What I love about what I do.
Oustide of work.
